Hobgood’s girls came into Lasker Thursday night and snuck away with a 43-40 win against the hosting Northeast Academy basketball squad...
Last time the two conference rivals met, it was a 40-point victory for Hobgood.
Despite coming away with a win, Hobgood head coach Pam Tutor was not pleased with her girls’ performance
“I was very disappointed in the way we played,” Tutor said, adding her team missed 17 shots in the first half. “It was just a terrible night shooting. Missed defensive assignments that we are usually sharp on, and we were just flat.”
Lady Eagles head coach Joella Brown was thrilled with her group, whose seniors shined on their own night.
“There’s a lot of rivalry, but it’s a friendly rivalry. To come out with this ‘we can do it’ attitude, I was just really pleased,” Brown said. “I couldn’t be more proud if they had won.”
It was a nail biter through and through. The two teams were tied 8-8 after the opening period, though Hobgood led 20-16 midway through the contest and 28-26 after the third quarter.
“With seven seconds left, we still could have won,” Brown added.
Added Tutor: “She had them ready for tonight. I love Joella and she’s a good coach. Her girls are playing better.”
Northeast Academy was working against a taller Hobgood squad, particularly in Taylor Smith, who led all scorers and Hobgood with 13 points.
“We had to double team her the whole game,” Brown said. “We had to change defenses three times trying to find something that would work, and these girls adjusted very quickly. It worked for us.”
Smith and Barwick led the Lady Raiders with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Others scoring for Hobgood were Jenna Leigh Clark with 10, Lauren Streeter with four and Hannah Casper with three.
Anna Liverman led Northeast Academy with 10 points.
Others scoring for the Eagles were Megan Futrell and Olivia Brown with six apiece, four each from Holly Byrum, Haley Jilcott and Tracy Clark and Addie Piper with two.
The conference tournament starts Monday at Hobgood.
For the Lady Raiders, Tutor said her team is trying to get out of the “lull.”
“We’re just trying to get back out of it. (With) four seniors, they are getting sentimental and worried about the end coming, having a hard time playing through it,” Tutor said. “At the same time, I’m just as emotional as they are.”
Said Brown: “We’re going into the tournament feeling like this. Even though we lost, we played well. You want to peak at this time and maybe that’s a good thing for us.”
