Carlisle baffles Trinity for 7th place in Wall bracket
Raleigh, N.C. — A rainy Wednesday morning brought a slow start to the final day of the 2015 HighSchoolOT Holiday Invitational Tournament. Ultimately, the Carlisle Chiefs were able to outlast the Trinity Christian Crusaders 56-45 for seventh place in the John Wall Bracket.
Despite scoring just 7 points in the first quarter, the Chiefs were able to stay in the game mentally and play a dominant second.
Trinity Christian led 16-7 at the end of the first, but Carlisle coach Jason Niblett said that his players “bought in, played hard, and everybody started helping.” Their 19-point second quarter led to a 26-26 tie at halftime.
The Chiefs shot 8 of 25 from the floor in the first half and 5 of 13 from three-point range. Shakur Daniel led the team with 8 points and 4 assists, Gabe Osabuohien contributed 7 points and 4 rebounds.
Eight players scored for the Crusaders in the opening 16 minutes, as a team they shot 7 of 16 from the floor and 3 of 6 from beyond the arc.
Carlisle dominated the third quarter, scoring 20 points and allowing just 10.Niblett stresses to his players that “playing defense can turn into offensive points,” a principle that his players applied in the second half.
Beginning the fourth quarter, leading 46-36, Carlisle continued its strong play. The Chiefs finished the game shooting 16 of 39 and 6 of 15 from three-point range. Osabuohien led all players with 17 points and 7 rebounds.
After the game, Osabuohien said that finishing the tournament with a win is “important so we [can] leave here on a high note and not focus too much on the loss.”
Niblett said that despite not getting the outcome he was looking for in the first two games, he was happy with his team’s effort. “If you compete, I can live with that,” he said.
Trinity Christian coach Heath Vandevender admitted after the game that he was “a little conflicted, a little baffled, a little confused” by his team’s performance this week, also adding that they are “going to have to go back to the drawing board to figure some things out.”
The Crusaders finished the game shooting 11 of 30 and 5 of 11 from beyond the arc. Senior Mike Boykin led the team with 10 points and 7 rebounds.
Carlisle returns to Virginia to play Mountain Mission in the Chance Harman Classic on January 2.
