Freddie Dilione, who spent two-plus prep seasons at Trinity Christian School in Fayetteville, is joining another elite boys’ basketball program in North Carolina.
A 6-foot-5 guard with several scholarship offers from Division I programs, Dillione announced Wednesday via his Twitter account that he has made the move to Raleigh to play at Word of God Christian Academy.
“My family and I thought it was a great opportunity both academically and athletically to continue to grow and develop at a high level,” Dilione told The Fayetteville Observer on Thursday morning.
After announcing his decision on social media, Dilione suited up for the Holy Rams on Wednesday night and finished with 12 points in a 68-52 loss to Liberty Heights.
Dilione currently has Division I offers from Eastern Kentucky, FIU, Houston, North Carolina A&T, Penn State and Xavier. He hopes to continue his rise in Raleigh.
When asked about the players that come to mind when he thinks about Word of God’s storied history, Dilione didn’t hesitate.
“John Wall, of course,” he said with a laugh.
The first overall pick of the 2010 NBA draft, Wall was selected by the Washington Wizards after a one-and-done season at Kentucky. The five-time NBA All-Star currently plays for the Houston Rockets.
“The most exciting thing is being a part of a school and team with such a rich tradition,” said Dilione, who averaged a team-high 21.6 points and 7.1 rebounds over nine contests with the Crusaders (6-3).
“I really just want to see how much better I can get working out with, practicing, and playing with high-level talent.”
Dilione, who opened his junior season with a 36-point performance against New Life Christian Academy, is joining a pair of talented juniors in Po’Boigh King and Khalil Marshall.
The Holy Rams, who have a 24-5 record this season, are scheduled to play at Winston-Salem Christian National on Friday night.
