HOBGOOD — Led by tournament most valuable player Morgan Lane’s 31 points, the Community Christian School girls basketball team won the Hobgood Holiday Tournament on Tuesday night with a 45-34 victory over Faith Christian.
“We led the entire game, using our defensive pressure to force them into a lot of turnovers,” CCS head coach Rebecca Leigh said. “We played awesome defensively. We rebounded well and kept momentum the whole game.”
Lane also had six steals in the win over Faith. The sophomore guard had 14 points to pace CCS to a 49-5 victory over Teach School of Virginia Beach in the opening round on Monday.
Olivia Bullard, who had eight points in the opener and two points and six assists in the championship game, and Jordan London (16 rebounds in the title game) also made the all-tournament team.
CCS led 31-14 heading into the final quarter, but a switch of offensive tactics against the Lady Cyclones’ 1-2-2 zone defense led to Faith closing the gap.
“They got to the foul line and got us into foul trouble,” Leigh said. “They made their free throws and got closer, but we were faster and were able to keep getting them to turn the ball over more than us.”
The Lady Cyclones, now 4-6, will host Wayne Christian on Jan. 7 at the ENC School for the Deaf at 6:30 p.m.
FAITH CHRISTIAN (34)
Reams 4, Johnson 3, B. Sassnaucht 7, L. Sassnaucht 12, Williams 5, Bunting 3.
COMMUNITY CHRISTIAN (45)
Lane 31, Bullard 2, Jackson 3, Bissett 3, Beamon 2, Giddings 4.
Score by quarters:
Faith Chr. 4 8 2 20 — 34
CCS 8 15 8 14 — 45
