The Halifax Academy volleyball team used a 19-8 run during its third set with Roanoke Rapids High to take a 19-12 lead en route to a 3-1 win Thursday at Roanoke Rapids.
“Well, it was great,” Halifax Academy head coach Wendy Tickel said about the game-defining run. “The girls said they felt like they were finally getting their momentum, getting back in the game but they didn’t want to carry it into a fifth game, they wanted to go ahead and finish it out.”
Before the Lady Vikings made their surge in the third set, they opened the match with a 25-15 win in the first set, in which they never trailed after opening on a 9-3 run.
Roanoke Rapids battled back with a win of its own in the second set, though. After falling into a 7-2 hole in the frame, the Lady Jackets responded with an 8-2 run to give them their first lead of the match at 10-9.
The teams then traded points until Roanoke Rapids took control with the set tied at 13-13, closing the frame on a 12-5 run to tie the match at 1.
Roanoke Rapids head coach Jodi Williams said the difference in her squad’s play during the second game was due to an improvement in teamwork and communication.
“Everything we’ve worked on in practice came together and showed through in that second game,” she said. “It was really great to see the teamwork and all the effort involved in that.”
The strong play from the Lady Jackets carried over into the third set as they opened the frame on a 4-0 run. The Lady Vikings responded with their game-defining 19-8 run to take a 19-12 lead, though, which led to their 25-20 set win.
Halifax Academy carried this momentum from the third frame into the fourth as it opened the final set on a 7-1 run. Roanoke Rapids briefly fought back with a 7-2 run of its own, but was never able to capture the lead as Halifax closed the match with a 15-9 spurt to cement its win.
Tickel said the solid play from the Lady Vikings during the final two sets was a result of better communication, which helped lift the team’s performance as well.
“I think our serving (was good). Our passes were not on the money, but we hit very well today when we had a good pass and the sets were there,” she said. “They started talking a little more in that last game, too, and that helped.”
Tickel also said the win gives her squad an idea on what it needs to improve upon before it begins conference play.
“Well, it helps us to see what we need to work on for our conference games. We’ve got some things we need to work out, mainly our talking,” the coach said. “This was a great game; it’s always a big rivalry for us to play against Roanoke Rapids. I thought both teams did well, but I just wish we could have done a little bit better.”
Despite the loss, Williams said she saw some positive things from the Lady Jackets that she hopes they can build off and carry with them throughout the season.
“I’m very pleased with the way they played because for the last two years they’ve worked on team ball and that’s all we’ve done was play like a team. In two years, this was the best team ball that I’ve seen. We just kind of ran out of steam there in the third and fourth game,” she said. “I just kind of want to play off of this game. Even though it was a loss, it was a win in my book when it comes to things we’ve tried to work on.”
Halifax Academy will play again at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday at home against Parrott Academy.
Roanoke Rapids will next be in action at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 31 at home against Rocky Mount.
