Spartans shut out Colts, win fourth straight

In a rivalry match up on Tuesday night, the Kerr-Vance Academy volleyball team opened the conference portion of their schedule with an impressive 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-15) victory at the Crossroads Christian School. The victory marked the fourth in a row overall for Kerr-Vance and also the fourth in a row 3-0 win.

“I think we came in loose and played well,” Kerr-Vance co-head coach William Hoyle said. “We were working on a lot of things that we tried in practice. Some set plays and we worked on them during the game.

“Sometimes they weren’t pretty and sometimes we pulled them off. It was a good opportunity to do that in a competitive match.”

The Spartans jumped out to a 5-1 lead in set one and never were truly threatened as they closed the set winning, 25-17.

In the second set, Crossroads took their first lead of the match at 13-12 and would make it 14-12 moments later. Despite earning a brief lead, Kerr-Vance remained poised and collected as they went onto win 13 of the next 17 points to close out the set, 25-18.

“I really liked that,” Hoyle said of his team’s second set response. “I just sat back and was going to let it happen. I didn’t call a timeout and wasn’t going to.

“I wanted them to feel the pressure of that game situation to see if we’ve actually learned some things and if we’d matured. I came away with, ‘yeah I think we have.”’

In set three, Kerr-Vance raced out to a 7-2 start before ultimately closing out 25-15. Crossroads head coach Christie Hayes said she was proud of her team’s effort on Tuesday, yet stated that there are still areas in which need to be improved.

“I just think when we get a few points down, if the team moral would stay up then we would do a little better because volleyball is really mental,” Hayes said. “But we played well. We really had great defense.

“Our serves were pretty good tonight. We need a little more desire I would say.”

Kerr-Vance freshman Sydney Tippett finished the match with a season-high 11 kills and senior Sophia Naradzay tallied six blocks. Kassidy Dickerson and Ashley Dickerson combined for seven aces for the Spartans.

“We spread the ball around well and pulled together and it looked like everybody had a good time,” Hoyle said. “I was pleased with the outcome and pleased with the play.”

For Crossroads, Lacie Steffensen had five kills and Kelcee Anderson added four.

With the win, Kerr-Vance improved to 5-1 on the season while Crossroads fell to 0-5.

The teams will meet again Oct. 16 at Kerr-Vance.
