APA defeats Bethel Christian in crosstown volleyball showdown
Arendell Parrott was able to end a skid while extending its crosstown rival’s.
The Patriots defeated Bethel Christian 25-18, 25-12, 25-15 to snap a six-game losing streak Tuesday. APA (5-8) had dominant stretches as the Trojans (4-9) have now dropped five in a row.
“We needed this win, and hopefully it gets us focused again,” APA coach Linda Bryant said. “We had the tough losing streak, especially going five sets in the last two games.”
In the first set, the teams were tied at 13 after Bethel Christian’s Olivia Fulcher recorded an ace, but Arendell Parrott’s Caroline Franklin played a big role in the Patriots’ ensuing 6-0 run, recording three aces and a kill. The Patriots didn’t look back, ending the set on an ace from Katelyn Corbett.
The Patriots jumped out to a 7-2 advantage which included an ace and kill from Ashley Hill, but Bethel Christian fought back. The Trojans went on a run of their own and Ashley Vause’s block put the Trojans ahead 10-9. Trailing 11-10, APA ended the set on a 15-1 run which included two aces from Collins Fanning, five from Franklin and kills from Isabel Faulkner and Corbett. Franklin finished the set with an ace to put the Patriots ahead 2-0.
“At the beginning of the game, we had a lot of unforced errors,” Franklin said. “Toward the end, we were able to control them much better, which helped us win.”
In the third set, APA never trailed as Franklin started with two more aces in a 3-0 run. BCA did get within 12-10 after a Vause kill, but the Patriots followed with a 5-0 run and never looked back.
Trojans coach Bryant Dilda said the team has the components to make a run, but have to piece them together going back into conference play.
“This team is a good team, but we haven’t been able to find the consistency from one set to the next,” Dilda said. “We tried a few things today, but it just didnt work out.”
On Thursday, Arendell Parrott plays John Paul II at home will Bethel Christian hosts Hilltop Christian the following day.
