Arendell Parrott won its 13th straight-sets volleyball match, but it wasn’t the dominant performance displayed in the previous 12, coach David Barnes said.

The Patriots defeated Oakwood for the second time this season 25-17, 25-15, 25-19 on Monday, but Barnes said the team looked to be going through the motions. Arendell Parrott (13-0) took out Oakwood 25-14, 25-11, 25-15 on Sept. 6, but the Eagles (12-4) kept the second match close, especially in the second and third sets.

“We didn’t look very good,” Barnes said. “We didn’t receive serves well and we weren’t aggressive with our own without serving out of bounds. We were pulling passes and didn’t play the net like we usually do. During every timeout and break in set I told the team that and even though we won three straight, I wasn’t too happy with the way we played.”

The teams split the game’s first nine points before a pair of service aces from Gabby Carriere put the Patriots ahead 7-4. Arendell Parrott wouldn’t be threatened from there in the opening set but Oakwood scored three of the first four points in the second and went ahead 9-7. Arendell Parrott would use a 7-1 run highlighted by a pair of Alli Grant Avery aces and kills from Hannah Scott Avery and Scarlet Combs to establish control before closing the second set on a 6-1 run.

In the third set, the Patriots took a 6-3 lead, but Oakwood scored the next five and later went up 14-11. Hannah Scott Avery had the next two kills and Carriere had one to tie the score before Oakwood scored the next two. Jorja Tuten’s service ace and Alli Grant Avery’s kill keyed a 3-0 run to put the Patriots ahead 17-16 and while the Eagles tied it up on the next point, Avery had a nother kill to put the Patriots firmly ahead.

“We were off a bit,” Hannah Scott Avery said. “We had already beaten this team before and I think we took a little bit off the gas, which we shouldn’t have. We weren’t making as many smart plays or passes around the net like we usually do.”
