It’s a Victory! Lady Kings from Victory Christian win East Lincoln Winter Jam
Coming into Monday’s championship game at the East Lincoln Winter Jam, Victory Christian girls basketball coach Sanchia Chapman had a simple plan.
Chapman, a rookie coach, wanted her team to play a basic 2-3 zone, sag off Olympic High’s players and make the Trojans shoot jump shots.
“We scouted them and saw they didn’t have good outside shooters,” Chapman said.
Her plan to play a soft zone worked better than she ever could’ve imagined.
Olympic scored just three points in the second and third quarters and Victory Christian got an easy-as-it-sounds 35-20 win that left Chapman awful happy.
In the second and third quarters, Olympic scored three points.
“This is big for our girls and our morale,” Chapman said. “They are so excited. It means a lot. We’re excited to keep building on these wins.”
THREE WHO MATTERED
Bethel Ekperigha, Victory Christian: tournament MVP was the best athlete on the floor and Olympic couldn’t guard her in the half court. She finished with 10 points.
Jada Brigman, Olympic: Trojans’ top player had trouble driving against the zone, but finished with a game-high 12 points, looking like a sure-fire all-conference player in the SoMECK conference.
Bethel Ekperigha, Victory Christian: Scored a team-high 11 points and was really good defensively.
WORTH MENTIONING
▪ Victory Christian has a. young team. The Kings have two seniors, one eighth grader, four sophomores and three freshmen. The future looks bright and beating a 4A public school team should only give Victory Christian, a small private school, more confidence.
▪ Chapman played at Victory Christian from sixth grade to graduation in 1999. She won a state championship as a sophomore and is determined to return the Kings to being the feared regional power they once were.
▪ Olympic had a three-game win streak snapped but the Trojans are still on pace for their most wins since the 2009-10 team went 17-11.
They Said It
“We’ve had a couple of tough losses and it had a lot to do with maturity and just not making the right decisions at the right time. We’re just going to build on this and keep going.” -- Chapman
