Lady Chargers’ streak tripped up by Wayne Christian

GOLDSBORO — A subtle defensive change by host Wayne Christian caused a major headache for Wilson Christian in Monday’s nonconference varsity girls basketball game, leading to the end of the Lady Chargers’ six-game winning streak.

Wayne Christian remained perfect through three games with a 58-52 victory, dropping Wilson Christian to 9-3.

Trailing 16-14 at the outset of the second quarter, the Lady Eagles switched from a man-to-man defense to a simple 2-3 zone with pressure on the ball.

“It took us probably half the quarter to get adjusted to it,” said Lady Chargers head coach Brian Trull. Meanwhile, sisters Caroline and Ella Fox got going on the offensive end for Wayne Christian, hitting three 3-pointers as part of 11 points as the Lady Eagles outscored WCA 17-7 in the quarter and take the lead for keeps. Wilson Christian, which trailed by as many as 16 points in the third quarter, could get no closer than five points in the second half.

“We’ve got to get better adjusting in game,” Trull said.

Freshman Gracie Farmer led the Lady Chargers with a career-high 20 points to go with eight rebounds while sophomore Jocelyn Bailey had 16 points and five rebounds. Caroline Fox led Wayne Christian with 18 points while Ella chipped in 14.

The Lady Chargers open North Carolina Christian School Association 2-A East Region play Friday at Hilltop Christian in Fuquay-Varina.
