King's big game propels Wayne Country Day over Arendell Parrott

Arendell Parrott has faced some top-notch prep prospects this season and Jamal King firmly put himself in the category Thursday.

King scored 14 of his game-high 28 points in the first quarter as Wayne Country Day defeated the Patriots 70-52. The Chargers (3-4) hit nine three pointers in the first half — King made five — and withstood a pair of Patriots runs to pull away late.

“I told the guys it was going to be a game of runs and we had a couple of stronger ones,” Wayne Country Day coach David Flowers said. “We knew Parrott would come back, but this was probably our best executed game this season and I was pleased with our defense.”

A.J. Banker opened the scoring for Arendell Parrott (2-3) at the line, but King had a personal 9-0 run with three straight 3-pointers. The Patriots fought back, but after a Matthew Huntley basket brought Arendell Parrott within 13-10, King hit his fourth three to trigger an 8-0 spurt, ending with Marcus Metcalf’s bucket as time expired.

“I can’t explain it,” King said. “It’s what I do in practice and I just thanked God the whole time.”

Kris Wooten opened the second quarter with a three-point play and the duo of Banker and JoJo Spear combined to score 10 in the frame, pulling the Patriots within 32-28 on Spear’s two free throws with 1:44 remaining. P.J. Hill would answer with a three-pointer, sparking another 8-0 run and putting the Chargers up 40-28 at halftime.

Wayne Country Day would extend its advantage to 16 in the third quarter before Arendell Parrott went on another run, closing the gap to 49-42 on a basket from Banker with 1:29 left in the frame and forcing a timeout. King and John Strickland would answer with back-to-back buckets to end the third and Cole Atwood hit a 3-pointer to open the fourth and suppress the rally. Patrick Mayo’s 3-pointer brought the Patriots within 11 with 5:07 to play, but the Chargers responded with a 10-2 run to put the game away.

Arendell Parrott coach Wells Gulledge said the efforts of King and strong role players were pivotal.

“In the first, Jamal had four threes — two of them, we didn’t have a hand in his face and the other two he hit with us playing defense as well as we could,” Gulledge said. “He’s one of the top kids we’ve seen this season and he has a great supporting cast. We knew going in they shoot 20 to 25 threes per game (the Chargers went 10-21 Thursday) and we didn’t do a great job with our defensive assignments. Still, you’ve got to give credit where credit is due.”

Metcalf had 12 points and Jimmie Sanders added 10 for Wayne Country Day. For Arendell Parrott, Banker had a team-high 13 points with Mayo adding 12.
