CCS wins 2nd in a row

GREENVILLE — The Community Christian boys basketball team was given all it could handle by another outstanding player in Pope John Paul II’s Scott Jones on Thursday night.

But after allowing Jones to drive at will in the first half en route to a 34-point game, the Cyclones went to a box-and-one defense to slow him down. The move worked as CCS rallied with about five minutes left to take a 55-49 road victory.

“We got behind early in the fourth quarter and Andrew Gattis, an eighth-grader, hit a big 3-pointer for us,” CCS head coach Ronnie Wells said. “That got us going on a little spurt and we got the lead. Then we hit our free throws down the stretch to pull a way. Rieshod Baines hit 6 of 7 free throws and Grant Webb hit two big free throws late for us.”

It was the second straight victory for the Cyclones, who improved to 2-4.

The switch in defense’s was huge, Wells said. As well as rebounding for the Cyclones.

“The box-and-one really cut off his dribble-driving,” Wells said. “The defense really pulled this one out for us. And we rebounded extremely well again. Bryson Barefoot had 12 rebounds and Avery Winstead had nine.”

Baines led CCS with 20 points, while Gattis had 12 and Michael Haney 10.

CCS will travel to Fayetteville to play Northwood Temple Academy at 7 p.m. Friday.
