From staff reports

With University of North Carolina head coach Roy Williams in attendance, the Greenfield School varsity boys basketball team rebounded from a sluggish third quarter to defeat defending North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A champion Fayetteville Trinity Christian 73-70 on Thursday night.

Now 12-7 overall, Greenfield of the 1-A Coastal Plain Independents Conference had to weather a final flurry from Trinity Christian (10-7). But junior Elijah McCadden partially blocked a would-be tying 3-pointer from the Crusaders’ Joey Baker as time expired.

“It was the most heart we’ve shown all year,” Greenfield head coach Rob Salter said.

The Knights were helped down the stretch by a 14-of-17 showing from the foul line. Junior Coby White, a UNC verbal commit, led the way with 34 points for Greenfield to go along with six assists and five rebounds. McCadden finished with 18 points, with Dorieon Suggs chipping 13.

Suggs was instrumental in the fourth quarter with Greenfield trailing. Mired in a shooting slump, Suggs knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Knights the lead. White followed with a trey to further construct the margin.

“We got a lot of confidence last week,” Salter said of Greenfield’s performance in the Phenom Hoops Joe Miler Invitational.

Josh Nickleberry led the Crusaders with 19 points.

Greenfield returns to CPIC play Tuesday as it hosts Greenville Pope John Paul II.
