Garner’s career high sends CCS past Wayne Christian

GOLDSBORO — With just five players seeing the floor for the Community Christian School varsity girls basketball team Thursday night, sophomore Morgan Garner ignited for a career-high 23 points and pulled down 15 rebounds in a 64-46 win over 1-A Coastal Plain Independents Conference opponent Wayne Christian.

Missing junior Whitney Bissette due to a mild concussion, CCS (11-7, 4-3 CPIC) opted to keep the quintet of junior Olivia Bullard, freshman Ashley Hartsfield, junior Morgan Lane, junior Anna Jackson and Garner on the floor for all 32 minutes.

Garner and Lane each posted double-doubles, with Lane getting 14 points and 15 rebounds. Bullard handed out six assists as Jackson pulled down 17 boards to go along with eight points.

CCS carried a 31-23 lead into halftime and expanded the margin to 55-33 entering the fourth.

“We went back out and we just told our girls to stay tight to their outside shooters,” CCS head coach Rebecca Leigh said.

Hartsfield was the third CCS player to reach double figures, netting 15 points.

CCS will host Greenville Pope John Paul II on Friday for Senior Night activities inside ENCSD’s Barney Williamson Gym. Although CCS does not have a senior on its roster, it will be the final regular-season home game for Leigh, who will step down after the season and move to the Atlanta area.
