With stalwarts Jordan London and junior Hailey Dail unavailable due to injuries, the Community Christian School girls soccer team found itself unable to find the back of the net Thursday afternoon in dropping a 3-0 non-conference matchup to visiting Wayne Country Day.
CCS, ranked No. 5 among 1-A programs by North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association, dropped to 10-5. Wayne Country Day, a 1-A member of the 1-A/2-A Coastal Plain Independents Conference, improved to 6-5. The Lady Chargers entered play ranked No. 9 among North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A programs.
Eighth grader Langley Barnes scored twice for Wayne Country Day, the first tally coming just two minutes into the match. She added her second goal with approximately 10 minutes remaining.
The Lady Cyclones were outshot 18-8 as keeper Emily Boyette tallied 15 saves.
“This little group of girls, they played as hard as I’ve seen them play all year,” CCS head coach Rhine Sharp said.
London is recovering from a pulled hamstring suffered in last week’s win over Greenville Pope John Paul II, while Dail ruptured her Achilles tendon in Monday’s loss to No. 1 Halifax Academy. London is expected back for next Thursday’s semifinal round of the 1-A Carolina Christian tournament. Dail is currently wearing a walking boot and her prognosis for the conference tournament is uncertain.
“We couldn’t muster a goal,” Sharpe said. “That’s all it was. I thought we passed it extremely well.”
Sharp praised the work of freshman Anna Jackson, who battled an injured ankle to fill in for London at sweeper.
The Lady Cyclones earned the No. 1 seed for the CCC tournament and face the Durham Cresset Christian-Raleigh Neuse Christian winner in next Thursday’s semifinal.
