FIKE 5, COMMUNITY CHRISTIAN 0

The Demons (2-0) constructed a 4-0 halftime lead. Senior Jordy Rodriguez opened the scoring. Senior Oscar Aldava booted the next two goals and freshman Jaylen Guillen ended the first-half assault. For the second straight match, junior Matt Cotton connected for Fike’s only second-half goal.

From that point, the Demons’ focus shifted from scoring to possessing. Junior goalkeeper Nolan Wiggs, surrounded by a back line of sophomore Myles Cyrus, sophomore Clayton Snyder, freshman Mason Lee and junior Ian Vergin collaborated for the shutout.

Cyclones head coach Monica Mills singled out the performances of Cameron Achilles and Jorge Jimenez.

“We played really hard, aggressive and stepped more to the ball,” Mills said. “Fike’s subs and the heat hurt us a little bit. Fike had a more mature, older bench; we have seventh-graders. They’re a good team; they possess, pass and communicate.”

Reviewed Fike head coach Chris Mizelle: “The first half, I thought, was good. The second half, our priority was getting the younger guys minutes.”

The young Demons definitely have their eyes on a championship.

“We’ll come out Saturday and, hopefully, win the game and do what we have to do to win the championship,” Mizelle remarked. “But the most important thing is to do what we can to win the match.”
