LADY KNIGHTS WIN 6TH STRAIGHT WITH WHIPPING OF CAPE FEAR
The Greenfield School varsity girls soccer team relayed a convincing message to its counterparts in the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A ranks Thursday night with a lopsided 8-1 victory over 3-A Cape Fear Academy on Forbes Field.
Sophomore Kat Stanley secured a hat trick for Greenfield (10-1), a 1-A member of the 1-A/2-A Coastal Plain Independents Conference. Freshman Serenity McNair added two goals for Greenfield as the hosts put away the final seven tallies of the match following a 1-1 standoff.
After McNair scored in the 3rd minute, Cape Fear (2-3) of the Coastal Rivers Conference replied roughly a minute later, getting a shot by sophomore keeper Jeallen Holland.
Six different players had assists for Greenfield, with Stanley feeding junior Libby Eagles in the 13th minute. A 4-1 haltime cushion was secured following freshman Isabelle Parker’s pass to McNair in the 24th. Juliette Suarez-Robles, a junior, played a ball for Stanley in the 27th to claim the 4-1 halftime edge.
Greenfield struck for three goals in a four-minute span in the second half.
Dean found McNair in the 45th, while Stanley collected a pass from eighth grader Gabby Beddingfield in the 46th.
Eighth grader Avery Williams had two assists, one off an indirect free kick to Stanley in the 48th and the final one to Suarez-Robles in the 50th.
Greenfield owned a 20-8 edge in shots. Holland had three saves for the Lady Knights.
Lady Knights head coach Randol Mendoza commeneded the back line play of sophomore Anna Grace Beddingfield and senior Ryann Jennings.
Stanley and Suarez-Robles remained active in the central midfield.
“We knew it would be a difficult test against a 3-A opponent in Cape Fear Academy,” Mendoza said. “Coach (Meade) McFarlane’s teams are always very organized and experienced. We were able to put pressure on them early and get on the score sheet prior to halftime.”
