Knights lose opener 6-3

Hampered by unforced errors, the Greenfield School varsity boys tennis team opened its season Thursday at Barton Tennis Complex and was handed a 6-3 nonconference loss by Fayetteville Village Christian.

The 1-A Coastal Plain Independents Conference Knights picked up two wins in singles and one in doubles, with McGuire Metts getting a 6-1, 6-4 victory on the showcase singles court. At No. 4, Greenfield’s Jonah Lozevski outlasted Tyler Eddy 6-2, 6-2.

McGuire Metts teamed with his brother, Cabell, in doubles play to produce an 8-0 win over Tyler Eddy-Tyler Bineham at the No. 1 position.

“We made too many unforced errors, but for the first match of the season with four eighth graders in the lineup, I was pleased with the way we battled,” Greenfield coach Robert Cunningham said.

The Knights remain at Barton Tennis Complex on Friday, hosting Ridgecroft.
