Doubles play foils Greenfield in loss
FAYETTEVILLE — The Greenfield School girls tennis team forced a singles split against 1-A/2-A Coastal Plain Independents Conference opponent Fayetteville Freedom Christian on Thursday, but doubles play proved to be the bane of the Lady Knights in a 5-3 loss.
Without the services of Greenfield’s usual No. 2 player in Avery Rose Brown, Greenfield was able to force the split. Singles wins came courtesy of Avery Vester on the showcase court, Grace Dinardo at No. 3 and Huma Hasmi at No. 6. Both Dinardo and Hasmi won matches in third-set tiebreakers at No. 4 and No. 6 singles respectively, while Vester dispatched Cody Martin 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1.
The Lady Patriots wrapped up the match in doubles before the onset of rain. Ally Oaks-Ellen Jones beat Jade Pridgen-Margaret Covington at No. 2 doubles, and Destiny Hinson-Jeanna Holland stopped Hasmi-Rachael Little at No. 3. The No. 1 doubles match was not completed due to weather.
“Our focus needs to be on doubles looking forward as it seems to be where we are struggling,” Greenfield head coach Robert Cunningham assessed. “I am looking forward to playing them again with our full lineup.”
Greenfield steps out of conference Tuesday to face Lawrence Academy at Barton Tennis Complex.
