HIGH POINT – Wesleyan Christian has hired C.J. Lee, a former player and coach at Michigan, to be its boys basketball coach, the school announced Wednesday.
Lee has spent the last four years as an assistant coach at Marist College in New York after four years at the University of Michigan on John Beilein’s staff. He replaces Keith Gatlin, who won two state titles in his nine seasons with the Trojans and brought the program to national prominence.
"I am incredibly thankful for the opportunity to serve as the next leader of the Wesleyan Christian Academy varsity boys basketball program,” Lee said in a release from the school. “God has opened a door for my wife and I to move to North Carolina and continue to work in industries we are passionate about and feel purposed to serve. I look forward to building relationships with the current roster, staff, administration, and community."
Lee and his wife recently moved to the Triad from New York when she accepted an assistant professor position at UNCG.
Lee grew up in Michigan and later moved to New York, where he was an all-state basketball and football player. He began his collegiate career at Manhattan College before transferring to Michigan for his final two seasons of eligibility.
Lee, who played point guard, played in 67 games with the Wolverines and, as a senior captain, helped lead the program to the NCAA Tournament in 2009, its first appearance in 11 years. As a senior, he earned Leadership Award, Outstanding Defensive Player Award, All-Big 10 Academic Team and Big 10 Outstanding Sportsmanship Award honors.
“C.J.was one of the finest student/athletes I ever coached. He was one of the foundational pieces for us as we began to rebuild the culture and the success of Michigan basketball 11 years ago,” Beilein said in the release. “C.J.’s basketball IQ, work habits, and relationships with students will serve to make him an even better basketball coach. I am excited for C.J., Wesleyan Christian Academy, and their basketball program. The future for all is very bright.”
Lee received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and a Master’s in Public Policy. He was an administrative specialist/director of program personal at Michigan from 2010 to 2014 and an assistant coach at Marist from 2014 to 2018. He has also been involved with Athletes in Action.
“We are very excited to welcome C.J. and his wife, Jocelyn, to Wesleyan,” Trojans athletic director Glen Foster said in the release. “His coaching and playing experience, combined with his background in Christian Ministry makes him an amazing fit for our program and is someone who will continue to build on the successes of our program over the last nine years.”
Wesleyan, a 4A member of the NCISAA, will open its basketball season Oct. 29.
