Gossett’s 4 goals not enough for Lady Chargers in opener
RALEIGH — Wilson Christian senior Lea Gossett proved to be a problem for Wake Christian in Thursday’s varsity girls soccer season opener, but the Lady Bulldogs were able to take advantage of a thin WCA roster to record a 7-4 victory in a battle of ancient rivals.
Gossett put goals away for WCA of the North Carolina Christian School Association 2-A ranks in the 23rd, 40th, 65th and 68th minutes.
Providing assists were eighth grader Karys Wheeler, junior Reagan Barnes and eighth grader Bri Little. Gossett’s final goal was of the unassisted variety.
“Truthfully, it went well,” WCA head coach Don Samson said, “We have 14 girls on the team this year, and of those 14, four have never played before. We were really vulnerable against a tough team tonight, and the girls got a good wakeup call of what high school soccer looks like.”
In goal, sophomore Kate Hoskins had 14 saves as the Lady Chargers were outshot 21-10 in efforts on frame.
Samson credited the work of freshman Chloe Villaverde in the defensive third amidst some position shuffling.
Wake Christian, aligned with the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 4-A Triangle Independent Schools Athletic Conference, evened its record at 1-1.
WCA returns home Friday for NCCSA 2-A District 3 play against Raleigh Christian.
