Taller Cape Fear crushes CCS
ERWIN — The Community Christian varsity boys basketball team found itself overmatched against a much taller Cape Fear Christian squad that celebrated its homecoming Tuesday with an 85-28 romp over the Cyclones.
The Eagles, with five players standing 6-foot-9 or taller, connected on nine 3-pointers in the first half alone as they built a 58-9 lead by the half.
“We couldn’t do anything with their length,” said Cyclones head coach Ronnie Wells, whose tallest players are 6-2. “They were just so much taller than we were and blocked a whole bunch of our shots.”
CCS dropped to 5-12 overall and 3-7 in 1-A Carolina Christian Conference play while the Eagles rose to 15-11 and 7-2, respectively.
Sophomore Rieshod Baines led CCS with 11 points while Ricky Fuller, who played just 20 seconds in his first appearance as he recuperates from an injury, hit a pair of 3-pointers to finish with six points.
Michael Okoye’s 14 points led the Eagles.
CCS will play at Wayne Christian in a CCC test Friday.
