NORTHWOOD TEMPLE ADVANCES TO THE ELITE EIGHT
The Eagles of Northwood Temple Academy advance to the Elite Eight of the NCISAA State Tournament by defeating Northeast Academy of Laskers, NC by the score of 9-2. Chance Chavis took the mound today for Northwood striking out 14 batters, walking two, and allowing only 1 hit in 6 2/3 innings. Noah Wingate got the save coming in for the final out when Chavis met his pitch count. Wingate struck out Kevin Taylor to end the game.
Northeast threatened in the first with the bases loaded when Northwood committed 2 errors, but Chance Chavis got two strikeouts and a ground out to first to end the inning. Northwood got on the board in the first when leadoff hitter Jay Hickman hit a double to center. Advanced to third on a pass ball. Then Noah Wingate grounded out to short but on the throw to first Hickman scored the first run of the game to put Northwood up 1-0. Northwood struck again in the second when Ben Hernandez led off with a single to center. Then Zac Williams hit a double to center scoring Hernandez. First baseman Eddie Wood hit a ground ball to third but the throw pulled the first baseman off the bag and allowed Williams to score from third.
Northeast scored their only runs in the third inning when Josh Byrd led off with a walk, Paul Calaway reached on an error from a throw from 2nd base, Then Andrew Bradley hit a double to left center scoring Calaway and Byrd. Then Chance Chavis got in his rhythm striking out the next 8 out of 12 batters he faced.
Northwood Big Inning came in the bottom of the fifth with the top of the order Jay Hickman getting his second hit of the day. Noah Wingate reached on an error with Hickman scoring from third. Wingate advanced to second and scored on Tevon Canady’s base hit to center. Chance Chavis hit into a fielders’ choice forcing out Canady at second. Chavis then steals second on a 0-1 count to Hernandez who later walked to set up runners on first and second. Second Baseman Alex Evans laid down the perfect bunt and beat out the throw to load the bases for Zac Williams. Williams launched a 1-2 pitch over the left field score board and into the woods for his first career Grand Slam and his Fifth RBI on the day which put the Eagles up 9-2. Northwood is now 10-4 on the year and advance to round three of the NCISAA State Tournament. Northwood has never been to the third round of the tournament. They advanced to the second round with a win over Pungo Christian in 2016, 4-2, then lost to Kerr Vance Academy 6-1. Northwood is seeded number 6 in this year’s tournament and now will face #3 Wayne Country Day in Goldsboro, NC on Saturday May 13th at 3:00 PM.
