Chargers reach state semifinals

STATESVILLE — Wayne Country Day is headed to the state semifinals for the third time in the past four years.

The “Big 3” of Christian Garloch, Nehemiya Shaw and Marquise Newell made it possible Saturday afternoon.

The trio combined four goals and two assists as the Chargers stunned third-seeded Statesville Christian, 4-2, in quarterfinal-round action of the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Class 2-A boys’ soccer playoffs.

Garloch provided a pair of goals off assists from Newell and David Gurley, and supplied an assist to Shaw.

Newell scored via Cam Gerrard.

Garloch, Newell and Shaw have combined for 62 goals, 34 assists and 158 points this season.

Statesville (9-4-0) ended Wayne Country Day’s string of 10 consecutive shutouts and 800-plus minutes of not conceding a goal.

The sixth-seeded Chargers (18-0-0 overall) face either No. 2 seed Gaston Day or Salem Baptist Christian on Tuesday.
