The host Community Christian varsity boys basketball team erased a 10-6 deficit with a 13-1 spree to end the opening quarter and remained undefeated by sputtering to a 51-45 triumph against DASH (Downeast Association of Sports for Homeschools) United in Eastern N. C. School for the Deaf’s Barney Williamson gym Monday night.
The Cyclones of first-year head coach Micah Baines never trailed after the torrid opening-quarter finish that was ignited by reserves Javen Pender, a junior, and Jordan Allen, a sophomore, but withstood foul trouble and numerous spurts from a scrappy United team to climb to 4-0.
The United was dealt its fourth loss in five outings.
CCS twice led by 11 points in the second quarter but DASH stayed in the game by sinking 14 of 21 free throws and outscoring the Cyclones 14-2 from the foul line in the first half. CCS was whistled for 14 first-half fouls.
DASH, down 31-23 at intermission, drew as close as 35-33 in the third quarter. The Cyclones then responded with six unanswered points.
The CCS margin was 45-36 in the final period before DASH capitalized on reckless Cyclones play and quick shots.
The United of head coach Lynn Adams trailed only 45-42 when sophomore Silas Dorsey was awarded a basket as the result of the CCS defender inadvertently slapping the backboard.
The Cyclones, however, stayed ahead on the scoring of junior Rieshod Baines and senior Davis Stone. Stone took a feed from Pender and converted for a 47-42 CCS lead with 59.8 seconds remaining. Junior DASH guard Caleb Adams chopped the CCS lead to 47-45 with a 3-pointer with 32 seconds remaining.
The Cyclones pushed the lead to four points on Rieshod Baines’ two free throws and sealed the outcome on junior Cameron Williams’ steal and layup with eight seconds showing.
Rieshod Baines was the only Cyclone in double-figures scoring with 11 points.
DASH junior Sam Haymore and sophomore teammate Silas Dorsey each canned 13 points.
“Both teams played hard,” Coach Baines reviewed. “My hat’s off to DASH; they played hard the entire game. I have nothing but respect for them and they definitely woke us up.”
Coach Baines suggested his Cyclones suffered from a Thanksgiving hangover and were uncharacteristically fatigued.
“CCS definitely struggled the majority of the game,” he assessed. “Nonetheless, I’m proud of the guys. The overall effort was there, but we were out of rhythm and out of synch. This is just a learning situation and another stepping stone.”
The Cyclones bid for win No. 5 against host Eastern N.C. School for the Deaf on Tuesday night and visit Grace Christian of Sanford on Thursday.
