Coming off a 73-16 loss to Grace Christian on Friday night, the Wilson Christian varsity girls basketball team needed a bounce-back effort on Tuesday night. The Lady Chargers got that and then some, coming up with a 62-34 win over Pungo Christian at home.

The Lady Chargers (2-1) controlled this game from start to finish, outscoring Pungo Christian in all four quarters.

“There was no doubt,” said head coach Brian Trull. “We had a family meeting yesterday during practice and got some things squared away. You could see that on the court tonight.”

Three players scored in double figures for Wilson Christian, as Kate Hoskins led the way with 16, Chloe Villaverde posted 14 and Gracie Farmer put up 11. Reagan Stoop led the Raiders (1-1)with 16 points.

“I think we’ve got to do a little better defensively,” Trull said. “But I was pleased with the effort. We shot the ball well, we shot 41% from the 3-point line. Like I told them, if you’re going to shoot 41% from the 3-point line, you can take 29 3s. We’ve got to sharpen up on defense a little bit. I didn’t like our communication and movement, but offensively we were definitely in rhythm tonight.”

As Trull alluded to, shots from beyond the 3-point line were the Lady Chargers’ friend in this one, with the team hitting on 12-of-29 attempts from downtown. Three players hit multiple 3s, with Hoskins and Villaverde each knocking down four and Farmer hitting three.

Wilson Christian started hitting the 3s early in the game, which allowed the players to build confidence in their shots as the night went along.

“I definitely think it helped to watch those first few go in,” Hoskins said. “It helped us be comfortable in that 3-point line, be comfortable with our shots. Those in-and-out passes when it goes inside the paint and comes back out, those are our best shots. When we get into that rhythm, we start to get really confident with our shots and aren’t really hesitant with those 3s.”

Wilson Christian started the game strong, building a 19-10 lead in the first quarter with a strong offensive attack, as the team got a few 3s to fall early. The Lady Chargers really took control with a 14-4 second quarter to take a commanding 33-14 lead into the locker room.

“I think we worked very well as a team, for our third game getting into the season,” Hoskins said. “We just came off of volleyball. We had been practicing for like a week and a half. So I think we ended up working really well together, getting in a good rhythm as a team.”

While Trull said he wanted to see improvement on defense going forward, one area on defense the Lady Chargers thrived in was getting into passing lanes, tipping passes and coming away with them, as the team had six steals on the night.

That ability was on display in the second quarter in particular.

“It was good,” Trull said. “Our defensive pressure on the ball and one pass away was good. It was when that pass went beyond the first that we weren’t right where we were supposed to be, but that will get better. As we continue to work on it in practice, as we continue to play more, we’ll be in a lot better shape.”

The Lady Chargers got a balanced contribution against the Raiders, with all that two players who appeared in the game getting into the scoring column.

That allowed the team to keep its foot on the gas all night and wear down Pungo Christian as the game went along, with the Lady Chargers controlling the third and fourth quarters as well in a dominant outing from start to finish.

“That was good,” Trull said. “Just to continue to play aggressive, see what they’re giving us, take what they give us and not let off the gas, not let them get back into the game. They shot the ball really well in the second half, but we kept going. And we’re better in transition when we can get in transition than we are in the half court, so that was nice to see as well.”

The Lady Chargers will be back in action with a home contest against East Wake Academy on Thursday.
