cfa Academy downs A.L. Brown in MLK Showcase
MATTHEWS – In a rare matchup between top Cabarrus County public- and private-school boys basketball teams, Cream of Cabarrus No. 2 cfa Academy defeated No. 5 A.L. Brown, 81-55, at Carmel Christian School Saturday night.
The two teams met as competitors in the annual Carmel Christian MLK Showcase, presented by Prep Hoop Report.
The difference in the game proved to be cfa Academy’s ability to hold the Wonders to just 14 second-half points, breaking up what had been an otherwise close game and helping the Eagles improve to 24-3 on the season. A.L. Brown slipped to 12-4.
The teams played a back-and-forth first half, with junior guard Trae Benham leading the cfa Academy charge with six 3-pointers over the first 16 minutes. The Wonders kept things close, but when the teams entered the locker room for the halftime break, the Eagles clung to a narrow 45-41 lead.
But the game began to change drastically in the third quarter.
The Eagles started out on a 12-5 run, with senior forward Garrett Hien providing eight of those points. The Wonders only made four field goals the rest of the night and went scoreless for the final 5 minutes, 40 seconds of the game.
Benham finished with seven 3-pointers on the night and led all scorers with 29 points. Fellow guard Isaac Boothe had 12 points and six assists.
But for as good as the Eagles were on the perimeter, they absolutely controlled the interior with their size and aggressiveness.Hien, a 6-foot-9 Furman University signee, tallied 18 points, eight rebounds, three steals and three blocked shots. Senior forward Cheick Traore, a Youngstown State signee who stands 6-8, had 15 rebounds, nine points and five blocks.
