ARDEN – From sunup to sundown, Friday was a great day for Christ School athletics.
And that is putting it mildly.
Four seniors signed to play Division I college sports during a morning ceremony in Pingree Theater – Chris Akers (East Carolina golf), John Fulkerson (Tennessee basketball), Michael Freeman (Davidson golf) and Young Perry (Wofford soccer).
And then there was one of the wildest football games to be played in the long history of Fayssoux Field.
Drew Johnson completed 24 of his 30 passes for a school-record 444 yards and the Greenies overcame a 15-point deficit in the final 9 minutes, 13 seconds of the NCISAA Division II semifinals to nip Harrells Christian, 44-43.
“We knew we had to win (Friday night) as a team and not individuals,” Christ School coach Mark Moroz said.
“We’ve been talking to our players all week about being a family and a team. This is probably the best team I’ve ever coached. There are no egos. It’s just 40 kids coming together for a team goal and they’ve been an absolute pleasure to coach.”
This is the 100th season of Christ School football.
And the Greenies (10-2) are now just one win away from their first-ever state championship in the sport. They travel to top-seeded Ravenscroft (9-3) for next week’s final.
Johnson has an unofficial total of 2,446 yards in his first season at Christ School and threw touchdowns Friday to Tyler Redmond (8 and 50 yards) and Kokayi Cobb (46). Johnson also had a 1-yard touchdown run.
But most importantly, the quarterback’s two-point conversion run gave the Greenies the lead for good with 4:05 remaining.
Jared Letman-Gash made five catches for 170 yards and Redmond had seven receptions for 120 yards. Keyvaun Cobb, one of two freshmen who start for the Greenies, returned a kickoff 65 yards for a touchdown at the 10:47 mark of the second quarter.
Harrells Christian (7-6) did not score in the fourth quarter on a Christ School defense which is led in tackles by Charlie Claffey (9.1 per game), Carson Jones (7.0) and Redmond (6.5).
