Lady Cyclones advance to CCC semis
SANFORD — Community Christian’s varsity girls basketball season will continue for at least one more game as the Lady Cyclones delivered a 43-37 upset to host Lee Christian in the first round of the 1-A Carolina Christian Conference tournament Tuesday night.
Junior Morgan Lane poured in 22 points as the No. 5-seeded Lady Cyclones improved to 7-11. CCS will play No. 1 Fayetteville Northwood Temple in Thursday’s semifinals at Cape Fear Christian in Erwin.
Lane, who also had seven rebounds, was credited by CCS head coach Rebecca Leigh for holding Lee Christian top scorer Lindsey Draughn to just 10 points. Lee Christian, the No. 4 seed, trailed 24-15 at the half but fought back to within a point by the end of the third quarter.
“They played really good defense,” Leigh said of her team. “In the third quarter, when we started to lose a little momentum, the girls didn’t let that affect the way they played and grabbed the momentum back.”
Seniors Jordan London and Eulyssa Giddings each netted nine points while Giddings had seven rebounds and London pulled down six. Sophomore Whitney Bissette hauled in a team-high eight rebounds.
COMMUNITY CHRISTIAN (43)
