Cyclones press past Epiphany, 78-64
Energized by switching to full-court pressure defense, the host Community Christian School varsity boys basketball team stormed to a 78-64 nonconference victory against Epiphany of New Bern in Eastern N.C. School for the Deaf’s Barney Williamson Gym on Tuesday night.
The Cyclones outscored Epiphany 46-23 in the second half in upping their record to 9-5.
CCS returns to North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A Coastal Plain Independents Conference competition at Pope John Paul II of Greenville.
“In the first half, we came out very slow,” commented first-year CCS head coach Micah Baines. “We were not active on defense. In the second half, we adjusted well with the press and did a phenomenal job of sharing the ball.”
Epiphany stretched a 16-11 margin after one quarter to 41-32 at halftime.
Leading the Cyclones offense was senior Mike Haney with a career-high 23 points. Junior Cameron Williams fired in 20 points; junior Rieshod Baines netted 13 and junior Dominique Evans canned 12.
Senior Davis Stone led CCS with eight rebounds. Williams added five rebounds and four steals, while Baines accumulated five rebounds and three steals. Bryson Scott pitched in with two steals and two assists.
“We have some things to work on and we’re a young team,” Coach Baines noted, “but I am very proud of them.”
Matthew Clayton emerged Epiphany’s top scorer with 18 points, while Jeffrey Williams bucketed 17 and Zach Warren 15.
