Cape Fear sweeps big WCA meet
Running its first 2021 regular cross-country meet at home Tuesday, Wilson Christian was joined with 17 other schools representing nearly 300 runners in three races which included a middle school run of 2.25 miles.
In the two 5K versions, the course proved fast 10 ten boys under 20 minutes and the winning girl, Avery Bishop, from Cape Fear Academy finishing in 20:58. Senior Gavin Lenz from Grace Christian of Sanford won the boys crossing in 17:35. Followed quickly was WCA’s combination of junior Seth Trull in second with a personal-record time of 17:47, sophomore Lin Scott in third at 17:59, and eighth grade phenom Connor Ford in 18:38, good for sixth place.
Other WCA runners finishing with personal records were Parker Bunn in 23:07, Mark Price in 21:55 and WCA’s fourth and fifth runners Brett Walston, 13th overall in 20:20, and Brayden Joyner, 18th in 21:48.
Only five teams had the necessary five runners to score as a team. Cape Fear edged WCA 33-42, followed by Grace (74), Wilmington Christian (111) and Fayetteville Academy (125). No other local teams participated.
Cape Fear girls edged Grace Christian 24-31 with WCA totaling 78 for third.
Running without its third runner, WCA was represented by Savannah Owens 11th in 24:31, Holland Miller 13th, Ava Zander 17th, Charlie Kate Barnett 18th, and Christina Watson 19th.
The next meet will be the Wilson County Championships on the WCA campus Monday, Oct. 4.
