SANFORD — The “big 3” for the Wilson Christian boys cross-country team is starting to look like the “big 4” with sophomore Brett Walston’s performance Thursday at a six-team meet hosted by Lee Christian.
Walston posted another personal-record with a time of 20 minutes, 12 seconds on the 5-kilometer course as he placed ninth out of 40 runners. With the usual suspects — eighth grader Conner Ford, sophomore Lin Scott and junior Seth Trull — finishing in the top five, the Chargers won the team competition with 11 points to edge Crossroads Christian by five.
Ford also lowered his PR as he finished second in 18:05 behind Grace Christian’s Gavin Lenz with a winning time of 17:40.
Scott and Trull were fourth and fifth, respectively, in 18:41 and 19:22, behind Mason Gladieux of Crossroads Christian at 18:17.
WCA head coach Dwight Vanderboegh was delighted that freshman twins Alexander and Samuel Herndon also posted personal bests. Alexander was 16th in 21:32 and Samuel was 25th in 22:35.
Up against a powerful Grace Christian girls team, the Lady Chargers settled for third behind runner-up Lee Christian. However, the WCA girls also saw PR times turned in by seventh grader Charlie Kate Barnett (ninth, 25:01) and eighth grader Tathianna Rodriguez (13th, 25:20). Another eighth grader, Savannah Owens, led the Lady Chargers, finishing eighth in 24:37 while sophomore Holland Miller was 11th overall in 25:16.
“It seems the girls have now found their identity with all four under 25:30,” Vanderboegh said. “The gap between 1-4 was only 41 seconds!”
Both WCA teams are scheduled to run at an invitational meet Saturday morning at Rolesville High, weather permitting. Wilson Christian will host its seventh annual Pumpkin Run on Thursday.
