HENDERSON -- For only the second time in the 2019-20 season, the Crossroads Christian Colts girls basketball team had the opportunity to celebrate a victory after dismantling the Southside Christian Warriors, 65-50, on Thursday evening.

Although Lady Colts head coach Shane Wilder believes that his team still needs to improve in many areas, he was proud of the effort that everyone on the roster put in to secure a much-needed win in the second half of the year.

"This was a good win," Wilder said. "We've struggled to put 50-60 points on the board all year long, but we were still having some issues with boxing out, so there's a lot of work left in front of us, but we are making progress."

The opening minutes to the game for the Lady Colts carried a lot of similarities to their other matchups, as they quickly found themselves in a 8-2 deficit after turning the ball other multiple times on in-bounds passes.

The Lady Colts would build some momentum by drawing fouls on the Lady Warriors, which allowed Brycelyn Woodward to keep her team within striking distance of the lead by sinking a handful of free-throws.

Woodward's electric play provided a major boost to the entire Lady Colts offense and enabled them to briefly take the lead in the first quarter before a late jumper from the Lady Warriors in front 16-15.

Despite accumulating more fouls in the second quarter, momentum began to shift in favor of the Lady Colts following several more great sequences from Woodward and two big 3-point shots from Hope Macklin.

A 33-28 lead for the Lady Colts at halftime grew to a double-digit advantage in the third quarter as the Lady Warriors began to break down on offense and failed to provide an answer for Woodward, who maintained her consistency all around the court.

Woodward stayed on the court until the final buzzer sounded in the fourth quarter, which wrapped up the best game of the season for the Lady Colts in terms of scoring with 65 total points, 39 of which came from Woodward.

Wilder also singled out the performance of Justice Simmons for tallying 11 points on the evening, but he expects her, Woodward and the rest of the Lady Colts to display the same mentality from Thursday and continue to improve as they prepare to close out the regular season.

"I told them in the locker room to relish the win tonight and come out tomorrow and box out," Wilder said. "You can't give other teams three or four chances at the basket, because they will make you pay. If we can get rebounds and box out, then we'll be in good shape."

The Lady Colts will be back in action today at 6 p.m. for their homecoming, which will take place against the 9-7 Lee Christian Falcons.
