CCS 8-man nets first shutout in rout of Halifax
From staff reports
ROANOKE RAPIDS —The first shutout in the history of the Community Christian School eight-player football program came within seconds of fruition in Monday night’s 42-6 win over Lawrence Academy.
Four days later, the Cyclones finished the job.
Senior Spensir Heath had three interceptions and caught three TD passes Friday night as CCS went on the road and handed host Halifax Academy a 46-0 shellacking in 1-A/2-A Colonial Carolina Conference action.
CCS improved to 4-3 overall and 2-0 against 1-A competition in the CCC. The league is the only North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association conference to sponsor eight-player football, and as such, will produce a NCISAA1-A champion among six teams at the end of the year.
“It meant a lot to our kids,” Cyclones head coach Andy Jackson said of the shutout win. “We got beat to death last year in the first year. Luckily, they’re taking some pride in playing defense this year.”
The CCS rushing attack churned out 263 yards, with junior running back Ricky Fuller running for 155 yards on just 13 carries. He added a 7-yard scoring run.
Sophomore Avery Winstead had 14 carries for 59 yards, including a 3-yard plunge to put CCS on the board in the first quarter.
While the Cyclones led 8-0 after one quarter, Heath began his outburst in the second quarter. He caught two TD passes, one from Fuller on a halfback option and another from junior quarterback Grant Webb to send CCS into halftime with a 22-0 lead.
Fuller threw a 57-yard strike to Heath for his only pass, while Webb was an accurate 8 for 9 for 154 yards and two TDs.
Sophomore Sam Saunders added a 3-yard plunge for the Cyclones in the fourth quarter as part of a 24-0 closing spree.
Senior Bryson Barefoot had seven tackles and a sack to lead the CCS defense. Saunders and Winstead each logged six tackles, with junior defensive tackle Christian Butler adding a sack of his own.
The Cyclones remain on the road for a Thursday game at Hobgood Academy.
