Two things that people look forward to in fall is the crisper weather and football.

While it’s August and still hot out, the reigning state champion Arendell Parrott Academy football team also got off to a hot start in 2016. On Friday night, the Patriots hosted the Lawrence Academy Warriors to open their season and defend their crown. Their title defense got off to a great start as they trounced the Warriors 26-0 on a dark and stormy night.

Connor Bright started off with a quarterback scramble that turned into a 53-yard run for a touchdown eight seconds into the game. Cole Daniels would score a two-point conversion to give part an 8-0 lead.

“We practiced that play a lot and watched a lot of last year’s game film. We felt that the same holes were gonna be there and we took advantage of that,” said Bright.

On Lawrence’s first offensive drive, a missed snap, recovered by the Warriors, buried them on their own 1-yard line for a loss of 22 yards. On the next play, Daniels sacked quarterback Jarrett Harrell in the end zone for a safety.

On the next drive by the Patriots, Bright orchestrated a drive down the field. First, Bright passed off to Zach Sylvia for a 15-yard pass. Trey McLawhorn then rumbled off to the left side for a 10-yard run. The drive culminated in a six-yard run by Daniels with McLawhorn running the ball in for the two-point conversion.

When the Warriors got the ball back, they went three-and-out. As they prepared for a punt, the ball was thrown past the punter. Gabe Braswell picked up the loose ball on the 1-yard line and dove into the end zone. Parrott held a 26-0 lead after 3:19 played.

At that point, the rain and lightning began to pour down. The game was called for a 30 minute delay. As the rains came and lightning continued to flash, the game was canceled. However, an attempt to resume the game on Monday was denied by the head coach of Lawrence and they promptly forfeited the game.

“We knew coming in that we’d be a lot better than they were,” said Parrott coach Matt Beaman. “I just told the guys to focus on us and play at our level and not to play down on their level. They played a totally dominating game. They were focused and determined. Very proud of how they played tonight, even if it was short.”

The Patriots will travel to Wilson next week to play Community Christian.
