Eagles snap three-game skid with win over Patriots

BY PATRICK MASON Sports Writer

Scoring points seemed to come with ease for the Rocky Mount Academy football team through the first four weeks of the season. The Eagles had scored at least 40 points in four wins, including two 57- and 54-point outbursts. Then the offense slowed a bit as RMA managed a 40-point game just once over the next three games — all losses.

RMA (5-3) got back on track on Monday, however, as the Eagles defeated rival Faith Chris[1]tian, 44-30, in a game that was moved from Oct. 15. Quarterback Wells Hutson, who opened the season with 12 touchdown passes and no inter[1]ceptions in the first four games, dipped into his bag again against the Patriots (3-3). Hutson threw for three touchdown passes as the junior helped the Eagles snap a three-game losing skid.

One of Hutson’s favorite targets, sophomore Marti McKnight, accounted for three total touchdowns on Monday. Earlier in the season, McKnight had four touchdown catches on four total receptions. Also for the Eagles, running back Isaac Lewis finished with 116 total yards and a touchdown.

For the Patriots, the loss is their third in a row after starting the season with three consecutive wins. FCS has allowed at least 43 points in each of those losses. In their three wins, the Patriots didn’t allow more than 26 points in any game. FCS will close out the regular season on Friday with a road game against Cary Christian (5- 2). RMA has an off week.
