CCS blitzed in opener 12-2
GREENVILLE - With a field that has been completely underwater, the Community Christian School softball participated in its season opener Monday without engaging in a single practice.
Indeed, rust was evident for the Lady Cyclones, as four CCS errors helped host Oakwood bust open a tie game after one inning en route to a 12-2, five-inning victory.
"The first game was a learning experience," CCS head coach Ronnie Wells said. "They played a little better than I thought they would."
CCS of the 1-A Carolina Christian Conference took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Freshman Kirsten Pierce singled to right field and senior Kristen Tyler doubled to place two runners in scoring position. Classmate Allison Bartlett followed, dropping a single into right field to plate both.
However, that would be the extent of the damage against Oakwood winning pitcher Jenny Leigh. Leigh aided her own cause in the bottom of the first with a two-run double before the deluge of miscues enveloped the Lady Cyclones in the third and fourth innings.
Leigh struck out four and walked one. Junior right-hander Allison Lamm took the loss for CCS, striking out four and walking one. Only two of her seven runs were earned.
CCS will play a doubleheader at noon Saturday, hosting Hickory Christian.
Score by innings:
CCS 200 00 - 2
Oakwood 206 4x - 12
WP-Jenny Leigh 4 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO LP-Addison Lamm (0-1) 2 IP, 3 H, 7 ER, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO
