Chargers go 1-2 in Florida

JACKSONVILLE — If this season, which began in similar fashion as the previous one, ends the same way as the 2021 campaign did for the Wilson Christian varsity baseball program, the Chargers might be counting another NCCSA championship.

Just as they did in 2021, the Chargers began their season in Florida and with similar results as they dropped two of their three contests. Wilson Christian, which went on to win the NCCSA 2-A crown last season, launched its 2022 season with an 18-1 demolition of Old Plank Christian on Thursday before losing to University Christian, 10-4, on Friday and falling 8-5 to Christ’s Church on Saturday morning.

Jameson Overton had the big bat for WCA in the opening win, going 4 for 4 with a double, a triple and four RBIs. Seth Quinn doubled and drove in two runs while picking up the win on the mound. He pitched the first two innings of the four-inning game, giving up three hits, walking two and striking out five.

In Friday’s loss, University Christian broke open a tie game with six runs in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore Parker Bunn, who led WCA with a 2-for-3 day at the plate, took the loss in relief.

The Chargers gave up 12 hits to Christ’s Church in Saturday’s finale. Senior Will Mercer took the loss after giving up three runs, two earned, on seven hits and two walks in 2 2/3 innings. Mercer, sophomore Apollos Horrell and junior Brant Hughes each recorded two hits. Mercer doubled and scored three times. Horrell drove in three runs.

The Chargers remain on the road, although a bit closer to home, when they visit Pungo Christian in Belhaven on Tuesday.
