Greenfield rolls over CCS, 14-1
Using a 14-hit outburst, the Greenfield School varsity baseball team received a glut of extra-base hitting from the top of its lineup in compiling a 14-1, five-inning victory over county opponent Community Christian inside Fleming Stadium on Tuesday night.
In evening its record at 3-3, the 1-A Coastal Plain Independents Conference Knights (3-3) used a 4-for-4, four-RBI performance from senior Luke Taylor. Luke Taylor laced a two-run triple in the first inning before following it up with two hits in the fourth — a single and a double. Both fourth-inning knocks produced runs.
Luke’s classmate and brother, Jake Taylor, was effective at the plate and on the mound. Jake pitched five innings of three-hit baseball, striking out seven and walking one while allowing just three hits. Offensively, Jake was 3 for 4 with four RBIs of his own. He laced a two-run single in the fourth as part of a nine-run fourth for Greenfield.
Junior Cedric Kirby was 3 for 4, legging out a trio of doubles.
For CCS of the 1-A Carolina Christian Conference, Davis Stone took the loss after working 4 1/3 innings. He struck out six and walked three. Freshman Drew Oliver, freshman Chandler Conway and sophomore Avery Winstead hit safely for CCS. The Greenfield defense committed one error.
The Knights will face Fordham (N.Y.) Prep in the Cal Ripken Experience on Monday in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. CCS plays host to Henderson Crossroads Christian on Tuesday, April 5.
