From staff reports

WILMINGTON — One night after a disappointing overtime loss at home, the Wilson Christian varsity girls basketball team turned to a reliable early season calling card — that of its defense — to pull away in the third quarter for a 47-23 victory over Coastal Christian.

The result moved the Lady Chargers of the North Carolina Christian School Association 2-A District 3 ranks to 4-2 overall and continued an unbeaten 4-0 string against nonconference opposition from the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association. Conversely, WCA sits 0-2 against homeschool units.

Leading 18-9 at halftime, WCA saw the homestanding Centurions trim the margin to five in the third quarter. However, the defense of the Lady Chargers responded with steals on four consecutive possessions that resulted in baskets, instituting a double-digit lead for WCA that held the rest of the way.

Central in that defensive surge was sophomore Jocelyn Bailey, who responded with 20 points, seven steals and seven rebounds to lead the Lady Chargers. Bailey was 10 of 14 from the field, doing her damage from inside the arc. Head coach Brian Trull described her as “very efficient and effective.”

“After losing in overtime last night, it was nice to get right back on the horse quick,” Trull said.

Tuesday marked the fifth time in six outings the Lady Chargers, the defending NCCSA 2-A champion, held an opponent under 35 points.

Sophomore point guard Kate Hoskins handed out six assists to go along with her eight points. Junior post Hailey Carnes added eight points, while freshman Chloe Villaverde chipped in seven.

Wilson Christian, which bids for its fifth win in as many outings against NCISAA opponents Tuesday, Dec. 1 against Cape Fear Academy, will be without senior Lea Gossett for the remainder of the season after the Gardner-Webb University women’s soccer signee opted to turn her focus in that direction.
