Lady Chargers win 10th straight with whipping of Bethel
KINSTON — The Wilson Christian varsity girls basketball team stayed the course defensively Monday night, expanding what was a 14-point lead at halftime with tenacious defense en route to a 59-18 victory over Bethel Christian.
In winning its 10th straight game, Wilson Christian (18-3), the defending North Carolina Christian School Association 2-A champion, overcame a subpar shooting performance by turning the Trojans (1-8) over on 25 occasions. The game was a makeup affair from Jan. 12 due to COVID-19 protocols at Bethel Christian.
Freshman Chloe Villaverde and sophomore Jocelyn Bailey each had six steals, helping to offset a 7-for-24 display from 3-point range. Bethel Christian didn’t score double digits in any period and joined a lengthy list of WCA opponents that have failed to crack the 35-point threshold. The Lady Chargers are 17-1 when an opponent fails to score 35 or more.
“We didn’t shoot the ball well,” Wilson Christian head coach Brian Trull said. “But, we were very patient on offense. We turned them over quite a bit.”
Three players finished in double figures for the Lady Chargers, with sophomore Kate Hoskins leading the way with 16 points. Bailey had 12 points and junior post Hailey Carnes netted 10.
On the glass, senior Katelyn Parker pulled down six rebounds.
WCA travels to District 3 opponent Raleigh Christian on Tuesday.
