Lady Cyclones fall in first CPIC test
GOLDSBORO — The Community Christian School varsity girls basketball team debuted in the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A Coastal Plain Independents Conference with a 65-38 loss at Wayne Country Day on Monday night.
The Lady Cyclones were dealt their third loss against three wins. Wayne Country Day, also opening CPIC play, improved to 3-4.
The Lady Cyclones stayed close until late in the first half. Up 34-19 at intermission, the Lady Chargers took command by outscoring CCS 23-8 in the third quarter.
Second-year CCS head coach Rebecca Leigh lamented her team’s 22 turnover and being limited to 26 rebounds.
“We can absolutely play with them,” Leigh insisted. “They are not a 30-points-better team than we are. We got some really great look snad shot opportunities. We just need to follow through with them and finish. We have to make our transition layups and free throws. We’ll be ready for them next time.
Junior Morgan Lane led the CCS scoring with 12 points, while Morgan Garner canned 10.
Wayne Country Day’s Jala Holloman, a sophomore, gunned in a game-high 23 points, while junior Lillian Jeffreys tossed in 15 and 6-foot-1 freshman Lexi Freeman 13.
