Covington, Wall pace Greenfield romp

Margaret Covington and Kaelyn Wall each had a hat trick as the Greenfield girls soccer team kicked off the 1-A Coastal Plain Independents Conference tournament with a 8-2 drubbing of visiting Pope John Paul II of Greenville on Tuesday.
The Lady Knights, the No. 4 seed, improved to 8-11. They will visit top-seeded Wayne Country Day in Thursday’s CPIC semifinals matchup at 4:30 p.m.
Wall got Greenfield going with an unassisted goal in the first minute. Wall made 2-0 in the 12th minute with Covington providing the assist. Covington then knocked in her first goal in the 25th minute off a pass from Anna Merritt Hauser as the Lady Knights took a 3-0 lead into halftime.
After the Lady Saints got their first goal four minutes into the second half, Wall notched her hat trick in the 50th minute with Covington again on the assist.
Three minutes later, Covington scored on a pass from Ryann Jennings before Pope John Paul II cut the margin to 5-2.
Libby Eagles, Safa Ahmed and Covington each notched unassisted tallies over the final eight minutes for Greenfield, which posted a 20-5 shots advantage. Sumer Hasson recorded three saves for the Lady Knights.
