Greenfield overwhelms Grace 10-1
Using an offensive deluge from the start, the Greenfield School varsity boys soccer team enveloped visiting Sanford Grace Christian, and a 58th-minute tally from sophomore Cullen Wells ended the match via the nine-goal mercy rule in Tuesday’s 10-1 non-conference victory on Forbes Field.
Greenfield, representing the 1-A Coastal Plain Independents Conference, improved to 6-3-2 overall and dominated possession by a 73-27 margin.
In the opening minute, Greenfield steadily built its attack and got an early payoff when freshman Jackson Stone found junior Logan Johnson for the finish. Ten minutes later, the surge continued. Senior Carson Lane put away an unassisted tally in the 11th minute and assisted on a finish by freshman Alonso Hernandez in the 12th.
Roughly five minutes pater, Hernandez fed Cullen Wells for another finish and a 4-0 Greenfield lead.
Stone knocked in the first of his two goals in the 24th minute on an unassisted marker. The Knights built a 7-0 lead by halftime, using a 27th-minute assist by eighth grader Christian Garloch to sophomore Gabriel Torres. In the 28th minute, senior Ryan Adox booted in the assist from Torres.
Grace Christian got one back in the 48th minute, but the mercy rule was quickly enforced.
Stone finished his second goal on Torres’ second assist in the 50th minute and senior Scott Thompson put away his unassisted finish in the 52nd. Off a corner kick in the 58th. Stone’s corner kick found the feet of Wells, who kicked it past the goal line to end the match.
Junior Cedric Kirby played the entire match in goal and was credited with six saves. Greenfield exhibited a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks and outshot Grace Christian by a 31-7 margin.
Greenfield will host Wilson Christian on Friday in a rematch of a scoreless draw from Aug. 28 at WCA.
