GREENFIELD 3, BEDDINGFIELD 0
The Knights did all of their damage in the first half, and the debut of Mark Aldrich in a head coaching capacity for Beddingfield was spoiled in the weather-shortened outcome.
Greenfield, the defending North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A champion, remained unbeaten in three matches by moving to 2-0-1. Beddingfield, a member of the 2-A Eastern Plains Conference, lost its season opener.
Junior Jackson Stone quickly put the Knights on top in the second minute, and in the 34th, slid a shrewd through ball to freshman Jeremy Alvarez. Alvarez finished past Beddingfield keeper Josaiah Parker, granting Greenfield a two-goal lead.
In the final minute of the first half, Alvarez scored again. He took a pass from senior Argenis Mejía-Rodriguez and beat the Bruins for the second time, netting his second tally with five seconds on the first-half clock.
“It was good communication by our three lines,” Greenfield head coach Randol Mendoza said. “That turned into possession for us.”
Beddingfield was aggressive with its substitution patterns in the second half, and the moves enabled the Bruins to generate threats on Greenfield sophomore keeper Tommy Fulghum.
Senior Jose Cabrera-Real twice came close to breaking Greenfield’s shutout before the lightning arrives. In the 53rd minute, Cabrera-Real headed a nice cross from classmate Ronald Lemus-Hernandez right into the arms of Fulghum. In the 66th minute, Cabrera-Real struck the far post with his shot.
“It looked like our first match,” Aldrich said. “It looked like we were playing a scrimmage and they were playing their third game.”
Fulghum had nine saves in goal for the Knights.
