Greenfield routs Faith Christian 10-1

Junior Alex Cortez-Rodriguez had a hat trick Monday night, netting three goals and dishing out two assists to lead the Greenfield School varsity boys soccer team to a 10-1 rout of Rocky Mount Faith Christian on Forbes Field.

Greenfield (4-2-1), the defending North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A champion, struck for two goals within the span of four minutes.

Junior Jackson Stone fed Cortez-Rodriguez in the second minute, with freshman Jeremy Alvarez finding classmate William Smith in the fourth minute for a 2-0 Knights cushion.

Senior Davis Currin and Cortez-Rodriguez struck quickly in the 22nd and 23rd minutes before Alvarez added the first of two goals, an unassisted marker in the 24th.

In the 36th, Cortez-Rodriguez returned the favor and assisted Stone. Greenfield led 6-0 at the time before Stone’s feed to Cortez-Rodriguez put the Knights up 7-0 at the half.

Faith Christian, coached by former Hunt head coach Drew Nick, opened the second half with a tally to avert the shutout. But Alvarez added his second goal in the 45th, and his second assist to Stone in the 47th made it 9-1.

The nine-goal mercy rule was enforced in the 59th once senior Auston Dew passed to classmate Nick Achilles for the finishing goal.

In goal, junior Luke Flaherty played the first half before yielding to freshman Frankie Peele for the abbreviated second half.

Stone, Alvarez and Cortez-Rodriguez all had two assists. Junior Thorp Smith and freshman Will Powell were also credited with assists. Greenfield will host Parrott Academy of Kinston on Tuesday, weather permitting.
