Gossett hat trick sparks Lady Chargers in return to action

RALEIGH — Wilson Christian’s varsity girls soccer team returned from a two-week hiatus with a 5-0 win at New Life Camp home school team Tuesday.
Senior Lea Gossett, who has signed with Gardner-Webb, had a hat trick to lead the Lady Chargers, who haven’t played since a 3-3 tie with Coastal Christian on March 26.
“We were very rusty. It took a while to get things going,” WCA head coach Don Samson said. “Defensively we were able to get things set and organized but it took a while on the offensive side to get things rolling.”
Gossett served up an assist to junior Reagan Barnes, who gave Wilson Christian (3-1-1) the lead in the 12th minute. But it was 20 minutes before the Lady Chargers scored again. Gossett then sent a corner kick from teammate Chloe Villaverde into the net in the 32nd minute for a 2-0 lead. Gossett then chipped a throw-in by Melia Hughes over the New Life Camp goalkeeper for the third goal just as the half was ending.
Barnes intercepted a goal kick and took it back for Wilson Christian’s fourth goal, which came in the 49th minute, and Gossett closed the scoring in the 66th on a pass from Bri Little.
The Lady Chargers owned a 21-6 advantage in shots on goal over New Life Camp, which dropped to 0-5. Kate Hoskins made six saves in goal for WCA, which returns to North Carolina Christian School Association 2-A East Region play Thursday at home against Liberty Christian of Durham.
