Greenfield outlasts Friendship 3-1
With patience as a guide, the Greenfield School varsity girls soccer team kept the pressure on Raleigh Friendship Christian and eventually broke down a stout back line in the final six minutes to procure a key insurance goal and secure a 3-1 nonconference win on Forbes Field.
Greenfield, which has won eight of its first nine games, outshot Friendship 25-10 and took a 1-0 lead into halftime on eighth grader Avery Williams’ assist to freshman Serenity McNair in the 19th minute.
That margin stood until the 46th minute, when Greenfield won a free kick in the middle of the field and doubled its lead with an accurate strike from sophomore Kat Stanley. Friendship (2-4) countered with a goal in the 57th minute, but senior Ryann Jennings found McNair for her second goal of the game in the 74th.
In goal, sophomore Jeallen Holland earned the victory for the Lady Knights, making eight saves. Greenfield exhibited a 5-2 advantage on corner kicks.
“The game was a close match between two similar teams in terms of talent on the field,” Greenfield head coach Randol Mendoza said. “Defensively, they were hard to break down due to their backline’s determination and effort in winning in second-chance balls. It was a physical game.”
Mendoza credited the work of freshman Isabelle Parker in the back third, referring to her effort as a “defensive masterclass” in helping to turn away the Lady Falcons in front of Holland.
Greenfield returns to 1-A/2-A Coastal Plain Independents Conference play Tuesday at home against Wayne Christian.
