Greenfield grabs marathon volleyball win from Pope John Paul II
GREENVILLE — Emerging from a 2-hour, 20-minute affair, the Greenfield School varsity volleyball team fell behind two sets to one and rallied for a 25-21, 23-25, 27-29, 25-22, 15-13 victory at 1-A Coastal Plain Independents Conference foe Greenville Pope John Paul II.
Senior Sumer Hassan led the way with a double-double of 15 kills and 35 digs as the Lady Knights moved to 5-6 overall and 2-1 in CPIC play. Catherine Alvarez, a senior, had 10 service points and 25 digs.
Junior Kaelyn Wall also notched a double-double, getting 30 digs and 10 kills. She also had eight aces and six blocks. Junior Caroline Stone finished with 25 digs and six kills. Senior Teresa Hadley matched Wall with six blocks.
Mary Margaret Coats, a senior setter, had 35 assists and six aces. Freshman Lily Hess tallied 25 digs on defense.
“(The) best game they have played this season,” Greenfield head coach Jadelyn Castillo said. “It was a long game, lots of ups and downs, but they gave it all they had, they pushed each other and they played with heart.”
Pope John Paul II fell to 3-6 overall and 0-3 within CPIC play.
Greenfield visits archrival Wayne Country Day on Thursday.
