Arendell Parrott defeats Bethel Christian in crosstown volleyball contest

A crosstown rivalry had close moments before Arendell Parrott pulled away Monday.
The Patriots defeated Bethel Christian 25-16, 25-13, 25-10 as APA continues its hot streak. After a slow start, the Patriots (6-4) have won four straight.
“We had a bounce back mentality,” APA coach Katherine Fesmire said. “We don’t focus as much on a mistake — just work on the next point. We’ve gotten a lot stronger mentally and it’s shown in how we’ve played lately.”
Bethel Christian (1-4) didn’t back down in a first set with nine ties and five lead changes. Maryn Gates’ block highlighted a 3-1 start for BCA and she added a pair of service aces as the Trojans went ahead 7-5. APA battled back and after Mackenzie Devine’s ace tied it at 14 for BCA, the Patriots went on a 5-1 spurt highlighted by an Isabel Faulkner ace and kills from Jordyn Chinigo and Caroline Franklin to take control. The Trojans wouldn’t get closer than three from there as Katelyn Corbett ended the set with an ace.
In the second set, Collins Fanning had three service aces as APA scored the first five points. Bethel Christian wouldn’t recover as Arendell Parrott extended its advantage to as many as 12, ending the set on a Franklin kill.
“Our team communication has definitely picked up,” Franklin said. “We’ve definitely put a lot more effort in our play.”
Bethel Christian jumped out to a 5-3 lead in the third, assisted by a Gates kill and block, but Franklin’s kill sparked a 10-0 spurt highlighted by eight Chinigo aces. The Patriots never let the lead get under seven and Chinigo ended the contest with an ace.
“Communication and energy have gone up, but we’ve gotten really aggressive with our serves,” Chinigo said.
Bethel Christian coach Bryant Dilda said the team has to use the energy from the first set and use it moving forward.
“We have to keep the same mindset,” Dilda said. “I was completely satisfied with how we played in the first set — I loved the hustle and effort. In the second set, a couple things went wrong and heads dropped. No matter what, or who we’re playing, we’ve got to be our best at all times.”
Arendell Parrott travels to Wake Christian Tuesday while Bethel Christian hosts Liberty Christian on the same day.
